Greetings from the Ewoldt Homestead.  The last couple of weeks have been very busy.  In late March or early April each year, I wonder why we put ourselves through the work of an extensive garden.  This year looked particularly bad for some reason.  But, after a couple of weeks of bed weeding, planting and pruning, things are starting to shape up.  Now we sit water-logged, with piles of weeds that need to be moved out.  It may take a couple of trash days to get all that accomplished.

I wrapped up the initial bed weeding / getting about 90 percent / and rose pruning yesterday.  Everything now has been opened up and cleared out which hopefully encourages new growth and ups the plants resistance to disease.  Before that could be accomplished, we had one rose become victim to Powdery Mildew.  I completely stripped the plan to the canes yesterday and hopefully weather conditions won’t favor the return of the fungus when new leaves and buds start to return.

We’ve had almost 4 inches of rain over the last several days.  Mowing and weed eating will become quite the chore for a few days once we start to dry out and get some sun.

We are going to roll the dice on the last freeze having occurred and put some tomatoes into the beds on Sunday.  Beds still need to be built for strawberries and garlic.  The garlic bed needs to be small enough to be moved into the greenhouse next winter.  Lots to do!
