23 May 2014 / New Mexico Supercells

This turned out to be an interesting day.  After starting southwest out of Clovis, we ended up driving northwest which led us to several supercell storms during the late afternoon and evening around Vaughn and Encino.  Several of the storms appeared capable of producing tornadoes, but couldn’t quite get the job done.  It didn’t matter, as the supercell structure more than made up for the lack of vortices.  We ended up driving well far to the west and stayed in Socorro for the night.  That’s a place that you don’t see a lot when on a “chase vacation”.  We picked Socorro with the idea that we would have some mostly clear night skies for the meteor shower.  A combination of a lack luster shower and more clouds than expected pretty much made the Camelopardalids a dud.
